Chamberlain NR 505 Week 5 Critique of Systematic Research Review

Critique of a Systematic Research Review of Continuous Support during Labor
Karen S. Lessig
Chamberlain College of Nursing
NR505: Advanced Research Methods: Evidence-Based Practice

CRITIQUE OF RESEARCH RIGOR
The studies were performed in hospitals in Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Canada,
Chile, Finland, France, Greece, Guatemala, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand,
and the United States

CRITIQUE OF LEVELS OF EVIDENCE
All studies used in the review were random controlled trials (RCT). RCT’s are considered
the most credible type of research because the participants are randomly assigned to a control
group or an experimental group (CCN, 2016).

CRITIQUE OF CLARITY
The studies are presented in graphs and tables. Selection bias is explained in detail and a
table and graph make the information clearer to understand. The information is broken down by
each study and presented in a table format indicating methods for participants, interventions,

OVERALL FINDINGS OF STUDIES
The overall findings showed that women who received continuous labor support had a higher
probability of having a spontaneous vaginal delivery

CRITIQUE OF CONCLUSION
Continuous labor support and a support person of the woman’s choice are recommended
due to the clear benefits for the laboring mother (Hodnett, Gates, Hofmeyr, & Sakala, 2013). The
question remains as to who would be the person to provide that support. Programs to offer
continuous labor support are also recommended
